Let’s get to know each other

Who is Þórarinn?

Þórarinn was born in Reykjavík in 1983. He has been translating texts from English and Swedish into Icelandic since 2007.

Over the years he has worked as an in-house translator at translation agencies and freelanced as an independent translator. In 2013 he co-founded tNordica Language Service, a translation agency located in Sweden, which was acquired by an Icelandic translation agency in 2017. In 2020 he started freelancing again under the business name Núans. Head over to LinkedIn for a full CV.

So he is experienced?

Þórarinn has translated more than 5 million words. It would take you about a week to read all that out loud without pause.

This means he has experience in a wide range of subjects, but he specializes in IT, web, marketing and pharmaceutical translations.

Does he do anything other than translate?

Yes. Þórarinn can edit or proofread your text, create style guides and glossaries and provide quality assurance and other language consultation services.

In his spare time he creates music, watches football, trains for half-marathons and plays video games.

What is this Þ letter in his name?

Þ or þ is the Icelandic letter “thorn”. It is pronounced similarly to “th” in English. Don’t worry, you can write his name as Thorarinn.

What is Núans?

After working at an Icelandic translation agency for 3 years, Þórarinn decided to start working independently again. Núans is the name of his freelance business.

The name is a variation of the Icelandic loanword “núansar” that comes from the English word “nuance”, emphasizing that subtle differences in meaning and tone can make or break a good translation.
